The Autumn Season kicked off with Wild About Wood’, our woodland festival which was held over the weekend of the 10-11 September. The weather was pretty good, there was plenty to see and do and most visitors left feeling tired and content. If you were unable to come along and enjoy it this year make a note in your dairy for September 15-16. During October we had 2 successful ‘Forays for Fungi’ led by Malcolm Greaves, lots of different fungi were found and expertly identified by Malcolm. The Autumn weather has been good with only one heavy frost before November and plenty of bright sunny days. The bright days really bring out the colours making the trees glow like burnished gold whereas on dull days the colours were flat and muted. We also had a lot of rain overnight, which is good for the trees and fungi but not so great for walking in, wellies being essential from the middle of October. Talking of wellies - during the closed period we will have 2 days of ‘Winter Welly Walks’, the first being on Boxing Day and the second on New Year’s Day. So why not come along and walk of some of the seasons excesses and then have a glass of mulled wine and some homemade cake. Check out our website for details. Also, if you haven’t sorted out all of your Christmas presents why not buy someone an annual membership of the arboretum. This is a great, long lasting present, healthy and fun.
