ADULT LEARNING CLASS
RAISES AWARENESS OF LOCAL HERO

When Mike Gwilliam signed up for an NYCC Adult Learning Class in Ryedale, he went along to find out more about Local Folklore and History. ‘I wanted to find out more about the history of Ryedale’ said Michael, who moved to the area several years ago. ‘ I found the course extremely interesting and there was lots of scope for discussion’. Attending the course spurred Michael to investigate a sixteenth century historical event, ‘The Pilgrimage of Grace’. His research unearthed a very impressive tale with strong Yorkshire roots. Based on his findings, Michael has now published an article, which he sees as a simple but fitting tribute to the leader, Robert Aske. ‘I found the course most interesting and particularly liked the informal style of delivery, giving plenty of variety to the subject matter,’ said Michael. Michael discovered that there is no memorial to either the event or to Robert Aske and now he wishes to embark on a campaign to raise awareness and rectify that omission. Should anyone wish to find out more or request a copy of the article, they can contact Michael by email on michaelgwilliam@hotmail.co.uk
