Brief Encounter by Barrie Tuck

We’ve had a really busy and interesting Autumn which included our Monochrome Exhibition up at the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre where over 120 prints from 20 members were shown, our first external Beginners Digital Photography Course and our regular programme of events and speakers. From this programme 3 evenings stand out for me, the first being when Mark Denton from Driffield came and exhibited some of his ‘gobsmacking’ panoramic  images, the second the visit of the Yorkshire Film Archive who presented some wonderful old movie footage taking in Ryedale and North Yorkshire, the last one being when the guest speaker failed to show (due to illness we later found out) and we had to rapidly devise a Plan B – did we panic? Not really (well only a bit).

The Beginners Digital Course proved so popular and was over subscribed; we ended up with six, or so, on the waiting list. We have received excellent feedback and we plan to hold a further course in the New Year, to register your interest or to request further information please email stephen@stephenhailey.co.uk

Our winter programme is our usual mixture of presentations and competitions (some fun and some serious). Of the presentations to stand out. The first being Barry Payling on the 3rd December, his talk ‘Wild Britain’ features some of the beautiful places he’s photographed while     conducting his photographic holidays here in Great Britain. His photography really is of a pure nature. Still on film, no auto focus or zoom lenses, no manipulation of the image whatsoever, no filters at taking or printing stage and no use of a light meter! All exposures are guessed! It should be a treat to see. The second being a repeat visit by Steve Gosling with ‘Lensless Landscapes’ featuring monochrome images  taken with a pinhole camera.

Local photographer and Kirkbymoorside Camera Club member Richard Burdon has reached the finals of the “Landscape Photographer of the Year” competition for the second year in succession.
“Take a view”, the Landscape Photographer of the Year Award, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, one of Britain’s most respected landscape photographers. The finalists entries will be exhibited at the National Theatre for eight-weeks and be included in the full colour book of the best entries. This is regarded as the top competition for landscape photographers and once again attracted over 20,000  entries from all over the country.
