Annie Amelia Naylor Charity |
He volunteered to do the job for six months, but went on for twenty-two years. Mr Keith Snowden has resigned as Chairman and Administrator of the Annie Amelia Naylor Charity, which is privately financed. Mrs Naylor, a former resident of Pickering, left two cottages in Eastgate ‘for the poor people of Pickering.’ Her intention that they be alms houses, but as they were both occupied, this was not feasible.
In 1978 the trust was formed by the late Norman Barnes as one of the houses was sold and the proceeds invested to provide an income. Along with the late Alan Pickup, Keith Snowden was appointed as trustee representing Pickering Town Council. Mrs E. Pennock represented the United Reformed Church and Donald Bell, a bank manager, completed the trust.
Mr Barnes fell ill in 1985 and as he was going into hospital, he asked for a volunteer to act as administrator for six months. Mr Snowden responded, but unfortunately Mr Barnes was never well enough to take up the task again.
Said Mr Snowden “There was no pay, but it was very enjoyable giving other peoples money away, especially when you know that it is helping someone. As the only remaining original trustee, I thought it was time to find a replacement.”
As well as helping individuals, grants have been made to groups such as Ryedale Multiple Sclerosis Society, Helpline for the disabled, etc.
Mr Snowden is succeeded by Mr Andrew Husband.
