We have been very sad to hear of the death of our good friend Dr. Kevin Waters on March 30th. Kevin was a Dr. of medicine, but was ordained into the United Reformed Church in 1984. He continued his hospital duties alongside his church work and in retirement, he and his wife moved to Helmsley. Since then he conducted many services at our church and was always there to help and support the church in any way he could. He served as our interim moderator in 2001 / 2. He will be sorely missed. Another friend of the church, Eva Stevenson, died earlier in the week, aged 93. She had been in a care home in Scarborough for a few months, but for many years was a regular attender at our church. She was a lively lady with an active mind and a great sense of humour. Everyone loved and respected her, she will also be greatly missed. Another change in the church will be the retirement of our caretaker and friend, Mrs. Freda Stead. Often helped by her husband Mr. William Stead, she has given exceptional service to the church for 35 years. Not only has she cared for the church building, but cared for the congregation too and has always been on hand to help and advise. At the time of writing, the exact date of her retirement is not known, but we are extremely grateful for all her hard work and her contribution to the life of church. On a brighter note, our church lunch will be held on Wednesday, June 15th at the Crossways Hotel. We look forward to this event. It is always a good meal and a very enjoyable occasion. This year our Harvest Festival will be on Sunday, September 25th. The morning service will begin at 11am followed by a lunch prepared by the Elders. A reminder of the special service to be held on June 5th, which is to mark the 50th anniversary of the Rev. Max Moore's ordination into the ministry. This will take place in the afternoon at 3.00pm. There will be no morning service on that day. A series of lectures and discussions were held at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Rock. The subject was “Being Christian in the 21st Century”. In view of recent tends in the media and elsewhere to discredit Christianity, its culture and heritage, these lectures should prove to be important to Christians today. Anne Redfearn.
