Modelling in Ryedale |
Pickering Experimental, Engineering & Model Society (PEEMS) is a club where members share interests in making models of artefacts common to older and younger generations. The sum total of our members must be in the region of 2 thousand years of modelling experience from clocks to jet engines.
The club was formed seven years ago when a group of individual people modelling in their own workshops thought there was sufficient interest in the area to form a club. At the inaugural meeting some 30 people met and it was decided to start the club. Our members come from the east coast to Helmsley and Malton to Middlesborough also London and Birmingham.
In the short time since, we have grown to approximately twice that number. A portable railway track of 75 metre length has been made and taken to quite a number of events, operating in steam and latterly with a battery loco. We also operate our track occasionally for charity.
The club has exhibits at various exhibitions, and a couple of members grace the cover of the national modelling magazine.
A typical years activities include: monthly meetings at the Beansheaf Hotel; attending rallies and exhibitions; visits to places of engineering interest; garden parties at members houses and of course a modellers must, endless cups of tea.
The club has members interested in locos, traction engines, stationary steam engines, petrol engines, cars, boats, fairground rides, clocks, aircraft, agricultural machinery and tool making.
Recently a new member remarked he hadn't known of the clubs existence, of course, anyone taking up a new hobby probably will not know of other interested people in the area. It is hoped that this article will rectify that situation for any budding model engineers
To find out more about PEEMS, come to our monthly meeting held on the last Wednesday of the month at the Beansheaf Hotel, Malton Road, Pickering at 7.30pm where you will be made welcome.
