We have selective memories, generally recalling the good things and forgetting the bad. We’ve forgotten how challenging winter was and remember that spring was perfect, forgetting that dreadful windy day towards the end of March. That did serious damage to some of the trees in the arboretum and brought down an Abies grandis, one of our tallest trees.

The beauty during spring was outstanding, it was as if the plants that survived the extreme winter were celebrating and put on their finest show ever. The profusion of blossom was amazing but even the conifers joined in too with their new cones of  purple, red, pink and orange. If you missed the show, it’s a shame.

During the winter a grove of 50 Katsura trees was planted in recognition of the support given by The Liveries’ Wood Group, they are all doing well and look superb with the sun shining through their orange and purple leaves. We look forward to autumn when the fallen leaves give out the aroma of candyfloss.

Summer in the arboretum is a beautiful tranquil time to explore or to have a picnic. We have tree trails to follow and for the children a number of self-led activities available to collect from the visitors centre. We also have our ‘Explore’ programme of interesting, fun, educational activities, for more details check out the web site.

Looking further forward to September, over the weekend of the 10-11, we are holding our third Wild About Wood   festival, which promises to be even bigger and better than before. So make a date in your diary and come along to this unique event celebrating all things wood
