By the time this goes to print, Ryedale Choral should have given its 60th anniversary concert, a performance of Gounod’s ‘St Cecilia Mass’ and other pieces by Parry, under the baton of David Shaw. I have been wondering what makes our choir different and gives it the staying power to last so long.

People have many reasons for joining a choir. Singing offers challenge - it gives an opportunity to get out of the house and meet people, keep the voice and musical skills honed and sharp (or flat if the score requires it!) as well as a chance to learn and improve skills such as sight reading and timing. Ryedale Choral always has a lovely mix of long-serving old hands and new members of all ages, so it remains vibrant and alive, with new and old friendships keeping the bond between members strong. We also have variety - classically trained soloists sing alongside those who have only ever practiced their skills in the shower and gently help them along.

Ryedale Choral also provides a port in a storm and makes you feel good. It is hard to think of anything else when you are singing and following a score. Worries and stress fly away and David’s gentle humour, huge smile and enthusiasm set a light tone, where even the tricky bits are accessible and it’s OK to get things wrong. It is difficult to be miserable warming up the facial muscles by pulling funny faces or unexpectedly singing a rousing     rendition of ‘Jerusalem’. If you take yourself too seriously, Ryedale Choral is not the choir for you.

Our rehearsals are on Friday evenings and round off the week on a high note. We begin at 7.30 and start looking at the clock around 8.15 in anticipation of tea and biscuits at 8.30 – singing is thirsty work and there is always that question at the back of the mind, ‘Will there be Jaffa Cakes?’ A reviving ten minutes of chatting and a bit of a laugh fortify us for singing until 9.30. Time flies and I am surely not alone in heading home singing to myself and feeling better than when I arrived. No wonder Ryedale Choral has lasted 60 years!

If you are interested in becoming part of the Ryedale Choral family, rehearsals re-commence in September. Please watch local press and notices for further information.
