If you haven't visited Beck Isle Museum lately, you really must try to come. We have been very busy over the winter months – changing room contents and showcases; decorating; cleaning and we think everything looks good. However it would be nice to have your opinion, after all, we are Pickering's own Museum and proud of it. At present we have an interesting exhibition on the life of William Marshall - born in Sinnington and after a colourful life started what he hoped would be the first Agricultural College in the country. Today, this houses the Beck Isle Museum. He also founded the Board of Agriculture - now known as the Ministry of Agriculture. Sadly he died in 1818 before the College was completed. He wrote several books and pamphlets on Agriculture. We also have another interesting display of Francis Nicholson's life story. Born in Pickering, he studied oil painting in Scarborough and in later life became known as "Father of English Water Colour". We have a booklet on his life and photographs of some of his paintings. We welcome School visits and also disabled groups at an arranged time and date, in order to have our Blacksmith and two Printers ready to demonstrate their skills. Ground floors are easily accessible for handicapped or wheelchair visitors. We do have a video of the Museum's exhibits and the outside buildings have stairlifts to another gallery including the Rosedale Mining display.
We consider our entry charges are good value at: Adult £5 -
Concession £4 - Children over 5 £2.50. and a Family Ticket at £10 (2 Adults and
3 Children.) Prices for groups or evening visits can be arranged. Margaret Jenkinson.
