Ryedale Jazz Club

Those of you familiar with our 'second Wednesday of the month' meetings at Kirkbymoorside's White Horse will already know our policy of  free entrance, with raffle. For years this has worked well and kept our books balanced, but along with many other clubs we always have the worry that funds will run out. So it was very pleasing to have regular member Dave Clitheroe offer to do us one of his excellent ‘free-hand’ glass engravings to use as a fundraiser. He chose to do a portrait of jazz singer Sarah Vaughan on a lead-glass decanter - it is beautiful. This was won by D. Pinkney in a special draw which raised £70, many thanks to Dave C.

Our musicians played at Leeds Jazz Club in February. It was a cold, frosty night requiring a cautious journey but the band was given a very warm reception. This is Leeds' only specialist 'trad jazz' venue (as far as know) and the audience reacted very positively to our programme. One of their members recorded the whole performance and kindly sent our club a copy of the two-CD set he made. We've been invited back again in August. This is going to be quite a busy month because on August 27th we are playing at the Pickering Memorial Hall for an event being organised by the local branch of Yorkshire Cancer Research. Look out for their publicity, and we hope to see you there.

Wilson Hepplestone, Secretary.
