What another interesting winter! I thought last year’s snow was bad, but it was nothing compared with what we had this year. Unfortunately the snow causes damage to the evergreen trees, ripping branches off and occasionally just uprooting them. A further side effect of the weather is the damage caused by rabbits and hares. With their normal source of food covered with snow, the animals nibble the bark on the trees, if they complete a full circle - the tree will die, if they just chew part way round, the tree will normally survive but will be set back. Anyway that’s enough of winter, we hope! (In the last couple of years we have seen a fair amount of snow fall in March but it hasn’t lasted). We’ve already had our spirits lifted with the snowdrops and aconites, the narcissi are up and the buds are bursting. Fingers crossed that the early flowering rhododendrons are not ruined by late frosts. There’s lots to be seen and loads more to come over the next weeks and months. So get your wellies on, bring your camera and your dog to enjoy a stroll around the arboretum and refresh your inner spirit. Afterwards pop into our café and indulge yourself with fresh homemade soup followed by a hot bacon or sausage sandwich rounded off with freshly made cake. What more can you want?
