Vive la Difference!

As a minibus operator, I transport many groups of people on various missions and – all being part of life’s rich tapestry – the differences between them are notable. For example I have recently been taking a group from the Long Distance Walkers Association to and from various points on ‘The Inn Way.’ They were walking one leg of this long distance path every Wednesday. Most of the legs were 22 – 25 miles; with the last one - at a mere 16 miles – being considered “short.” These people were middle aged, tall, slim, attractive and positively booming with health and vitality.

Contrast this with another typical minibus group – out for a good time. Charming certainly, young, fresh, healthy and attractive, but after a night’s carousing find it somewhat difficult to locate the minibus for the journey home. It then becomes a matter of luck whether or not they make it up the minibus step, whether they actually remember where they live and whether they will walk in the right direction when they get there.

Still – everyone has their own idea of enjoyment and freedom of choice. It’s up to them. The difference is that – unlike a group on a good night out – the walking party’s positive attributes are still apparent on the homeward journey and – not only do they refrain from using the chamois leather as a towel – they would rarely, if ever, ask the driver to stop in the next layby!
