RENEWAL OF FAIRTRADE TOWN STATUS |
|
My heart sinks as I look at the pile of forms and information required for the biannual application to the Fairtrade Foundation for our re-approval as a Fairtrade Town. This is no lightweight formality, but a searching in-depth look at all aspects and support for Fairtrade in Pickering. So what is involved? Top of the list is the involvement and support of the Town Council. This is followed by detailed availability of Fairtrade products in shops, cafes, catering establishments and the Tourist Industry. Next we must look at local work places and community organisations such as schools and churches. Goal 4 is looking at how we attract media coverage and popular support for the campaign. Finally a look at the steering group, what have we been doing to ensure continued commitment? In all areas comparison is made to our last application, our achievements will be commented on and areas of concern identified. There is no doubt that the award if given is definitely earned and well deserved. Whilst the application is a most daunting task, having been involved with the steering group from the beginning completing the application shows a steady upward graph in virtually every category as Fairtrade becomes increasingly part of every day life. Congratulations to the steering group and the people of Pickering BUT I will breathe a sigh of relief when hopefully once again we get the seal of approval and that certificate arrives in the post.
