Delegation from Pickering Town Council to Corbie - France - April 08 |

Picture shows Cllr Julie Hepworth & Town Clerk
Andrew Husband.
Telephone box still in use was given by the Twinning Association many years ago.
Andrew and I happened upon it after we had been to the Dawn Service.
Three delegates went to Corbie at the invitation of their Twinning Association, Councillor Julie Hepworth, Councillor Margaret Lowe and Town Clerk Mr Andrew Husband.
After a day in Amiens looking at the magnificent Cathedral we were met in Corbie by M Vansteene and a reception to meet our hosts. The main purpose of our visit was to join in the commemorations of Anzac Day and the 90th Anniversary of Villers-Bretonneux.
We attended the very moving Dawn Service at the Australian National Memorial, which took place at 5am in the presence of some 5000 visiting Australians.
We were given the chance to visit many of the cemeteries and memorials on the Somme and to experience the quiet and tranquillity in these well kept cemeteries where our soldiers are laid to rest.
Thiepval was one such magnificent memorial to the British and French who fell in the Great War. We visited the “Historial” of the Great War in Peronnes, a very informative and interesting Museum.
We were guests at an evening dinner given by the Twinning Association.
On Saturday we attended Anzac Day Community Commemorations. Another service to mark the 90th Anniversary.
The Mayor of Corbie, M Alain Babaut hosted our party at his house and later we were taken to some of the most beautiful parts of the Somme Valley.
On the last evening we went to a Jazz Concert in Corbie.
We left Corbie on Sunday morning but before we left the Somme we went back to Thiepval to place a little cross on this mighty memorial. The cross read ‘In Memoriam from the people of Pickering.’
A tiring visit with a busy programme but a very moving experience and one which none of us will ever forget.
Cllr Julie Hepworth.
