Ryedale Jazz Society |

After two years based at Ryedale School, we moved the Junior Jazz Project back to Kirkbymoorside Community Primary School. This was their 6th year of involvement and we had a record number of their young musicians participating - 34 to be precise - the youngest aged six. After a series of rehearsals, and two longer workshops at which singers and instrumentalists were brought together, the final concert was performed to a full hall on 2nd July. It was very pleasing to see, well before the concert was due to start, many extra chairs having to be brought out as the audience far exceeded the estimated attendance. Once again we were pleased to be joined by four members of the local 'University of the Third Age' (U3A) learner 'C-clarinet' group - the oldest at 84 years young. As usual Kirkbymoorside musician Graham Lyons wrote and arranged all the music to suit the capabilities of our performers. The eight pieces in the programme ranged from old dixieland standards to a ballad and songs from films, together with three of Graham's compositions*, two of which were written especially for this year's project - so we can claim them as 'world premiers'. Here is our list of tunes:
Pick Yourself Up; I left my Heart in San Francisco; Darktown Strutters Ball;
Kirkybymoorside Kalypso*; Two Sails* Summer Breeze*; Down by the Riverside; The Bare Necessities of Life.
This year Ryedale Jazz Society were the sole sponsors of the Junior Jazz Project.
Our Ryedale Jazz band played at Withernsea on 20th July as part of their Council's summer season entertainment schedule. It was a long winding road to get there, but on arrival we found they have a superb concert area in the Valley Gardens. There is a covered stage and the acoustics are excellent for an outdoor venue. You may read this just in time to be reminded of our Wednesday September 10th meeting of the Jazz Club at The White Horse, Kirkbymoorside. Music from 8.30 pm. All are welcome.
